Saragarhi Day - 12 September

The Saragarhi battle was fought on the north-west side of India.

Saragarhi is the name of a village that is in Pakistan now. 

Saragarhi post served as a link between the two forts - Fort Lockhart and Fort Gulistan.

There was a conflict between the British Indian Empire and the Afghan tribesmen.

On 12 September 1897, afghans moved forward to the fort and attacked it. 

This fort was defended by the 21 soldiers of the 36th Sikh regiment of the British Indian Army of that time.

The Afghani tribe were many times greater in number than the Sikh soldiers. Some say that the afghans were around 10000 in number.

The battle took place in which all the 21 Sikh soldiers fought braverly and laid down their lives, killing many of the Afghan soldiers.

Every year 12 September is remembered for the bravery of Sikh soldiers who fought the battle at Saragarhi. 

The Sikh regiment of the Indian army remembers these soldiers every year on this day.

These 21 soldiers were led by Havildar Ishar Singh.

All these 21 soldiers were awarded the Indian Order of Merit posthumously. It was the highest gallantry award of that time.

This is a battle in history that is known for its courage and bravery.

In 2019, a bollywood film named " Kesari" was made on the battle of Saragarhi. 

It was directed by Anurag Singh. Actors of this film were Akshay Kumar, Parineeti Chopra, Suvinder Vicky etc.
